First Track Day Pit Suggestions

I have been known to walk them right back under those peoples EZ Ups too...

Be right and build a box for them... It's amazing what $6 in Plywood can do for a loud generator...

 

Friends don't let friends buy loud generators.

 

I've been tempted to unplug the 100' + extension cords more than once.

Yep. And those people all eventually say, "I don't know how I went that long without getting a good generator ..."

 

I'm glad I spent the money. My generator can sit under my ez-up and I still have a normal conversation.

 

Yea well not all of us can afford all the extra top of the line extras that goes along with track days right away and for the record to get a "quiet" equivalent would be around 3 grand compared to $299.99.

 

There are now some decent sounding less expensive ones. The construction site ones in the tube frame are :fear:

Not so. Honda East sells Yamaha inverter generators (yes, weird I know) at really good pricing.

 

I have a generator and I have used it about two times in the years that I have been riding. Just ask people to share power... Always works!

I have a generator, yes one of the loud ones. I took the suggestion noted above, but instead of plywood, I built it out of sound deadening material. Bought the material at home depot. 20' feet from it, and it was as quite as any 3K unit. As noted above, because I could be within 20' and used home made 10 gauge wire for my cord, my generator runs at 1/2 power. With a little creativity, and common sense, a $350.00 generator can work just as effectively as a 2K - 3K generator. However on the other hand, after all that work, I have only used it twice in three years. Every track I go to has power, Tally Grand Prix, Barber, Road Atlanta, and Roebling Road. I do use it at Jennings, almost no power above 110 there. Have not been to VIR since I got my trailer, so not sure if VIR has power. Have not been to NOLA, CMP, or NCAAR so not sure if they have power. With a new job, and more opportunity to travel next year, I may need to use it more next year. But so far it has been somewhat of a waste of money. I have actually used it at home to eliminate long cord runs running power tools (I have almost an acre of ground) to repair fencing far out from the house.

 

Also it should be noted since the thread title is specifically for first track day, you don't NEED a generator. I've been doing three years of track days and only just got a generator this year due to starting to race and wanting to run warmers. The only thing I'd need power for before was to charge up cameras and stuff which could be done with either a battery pack or ideally I'd ask someone to let me plug into their generator over lunch.

Also for those who are looking for one, with winter coming up it's time to start scouting Craigslist for a nice used one. I spent $500 on my Honda EU2000i. Not sure where the $2-3K prices are coming from but then again I'm a man of simple needs.

 

I think the 2K comes from those of us that need a 30amp or even 50amp generator to run our trailers, air, tire warmers, microwave, toaster oven, etc. I know why come to the track just stay home.
