Since I'm a cheap ass (and like working on random projects), I was thinking of doing a few modifications to my 4x8 HF open trailer. One mod being a beefier axle (for peace of mind, don't plan on using it for multiple bikes) and putting some side rails. My goal is to start putting a few more things on the trailer, instead of in the truck (gas cans/canopy/cooler etc).

What do you guys think, worth it? Any safety concerns I should be aware of?

I wouldn't bother. If you look hard enough you can find a small enclosed or already stronger open trailer for the same money your going to spend plus whatever you get out of selling yours.

I was in the market for a smaller enclosed trailer, but the ease of moving this trailer around in my backyard is hard to beat.

The axle is fine for 2 bikes. I think folding trailer is 1100 or something pounds which will hold 2-3 bikes no problem. Do you use a pitbull trs or a chock? Is it the folding trailer or the rigid one? I made a plywood floor that bolts to the tounge behind the cross member. It's the exact perfect fit for 2 square gas cans side by side. I added some eye bolts to run a bungee through the handles and they haven't come off in 2+ years of driving all over the midwest.
