Hey guys, new to the board, and the scene. Just did my first track day last weekend at Gingerman and got hooked. My question is I'm looking into getting a track only bike, 13+ street triples have daytona subframes so i can slam some clip ons on the bike and get hotbodies fairings, or leave it naked, or would I be better off finding a daytona and going from there? I really want to stick with Triumph since I'm extremely familiar with their power and engine internals. Thoughts, comments, concerns?
675R's come from the factory with Ohlins, Brembos, a quckshifter, etc. It'd cost way more to turn a Street Triple into a Daytona than it would be to buy one. Best option: Find an already tracked out Daytona. Used track/race bikes come with all the parts you'd eventually end up spending thousands on and have lower resale values than stock street bikes.
Pick up something already prepped. Buying a street Daytona only to convert to track use is going to be expensive, and trying to Daytonize a Striple only more so. visit the 13x forums and/or check out TDJ Yard Sale on FB. Last I saw, there was a prepped Daytona in Illinois for a decent price on TDJ.
Ive been watching copart.com and found a few wrecked daytonas. Minor case scrapes broken ignition switchs. Minor stuff. One went the other day 2015 daytona R for 1100 bucks.
Welcome Hoover! I was at Gingerman as well this past weekend, and think I saw your bike? I know I saw a Street Triple or two.... I'm new to track days as well and went through the EXACT same decision process after getting hooked about 5 months ago. I have a 2016 Speed Triple R (with the Ohlins, Brembos and Quickshifter...and Apex clip ons and sato rearsets... ).... I knew the S3R would definitely be capable on the track, but I'm a dork and wanted to keep it all nice and shiny for the street. So I shopped around here and the 13x forums for a few months, and found a really nice, fairly reasonably priced, prepped D675R track bike (former Apex bike). The bike itself was essentially done, and just needed some minor repairs and maintenance (fun stuff, nothing too time consuming or pricey). There are many benefits to an already prepped bike, saving a lot time, money, etc. Keep in mind these bikes aren't perfect - but for me, that was the lure...I didn't want to freak out when it gets scratched or covered in tar from the track, let alone if/when lowsided, etc. The bike is "broken in" already and has it's scars, so I'm not so nervous on it! There are only a few downsides to buying a bike that is basically done / ready for the track, one being lack of knowing complete history (but that's case x case with any used bike),...I still have a lot of "is that normal" kind of questions, since I don't know how it road with stock parts, etc. The only other downside is the strange looks you get with a really nice track bike, and then rolling out in Novice (at least that's my case...the bike is WAYYYY faster than I am!) But as they say, lookin' good is half the battle! haha In all seriousness though, you will likely be more comfortable and have more fun in the long run on a track-specific Daytona. The track support for the D675 is awesome, plenty of parts and knowledge (especially with Apex / STT guys), and the D675's are just so much fun to ride. Personally, I like keeping the street bike for the street, and track bike for the track. No compromises for either that way! But at the end of the day, buy what YOU like and ride it! No wrong way as long as you are enjoying yourself!
Thanks for the input man! Yeah I had the white 2018 striple, I was with my buddy with the 17 FZ09. I think ill hold off and see what I can find for a daytona, hopefully one with ABS. Thats why I want to keep the striple for the street and a track daytona. I'd be devastated if I dumped my triple on the track, something I'm trying tk avoid. Were doing another track day early september at Autobahn. Then its time to start looking for track bikes. Whats the 13x forum i keep seeing? Also any other places i should look for track bikes? I do not have facebook so those are out.
It's the WERA racing forums...lots of stuff on there. It's forums.13x.com The other resource I saw the most bikes on was the Michigan Track Riders group on Facebook. Lot's of activity there - may be worth signing up for facebook all incognito to access it. Hope that helps - feel free to reach out if any other questions. If it helps, a friend of mine has a 2010ish Street Triple for street riding and tracks a similar vintage Daytona. He was there at Gingerman this weekend too in Intermediate (the Daytona had the Black/gold geometric design. Seems to be the best of both worlds for him.
If you have a bad back, Striple. If you are good, get a 2013 or newer Daytona R. The Daytona has more ommph on the top end. Either way, don't try to "daytona-ize" a Striple.
What they said, if you have a triple then the RPM limit shouldn't be an issue. The Apex bike was sweet saw it several times. Get the Daytona and don't look back. OH, the Wera forum is a riot. Just don't expect a lot of bike talk and be careful where you post a video.
I have a street triple and a gold/black daytona for the track. Like everyone else is saying, if you plan on doing a lot of track days get an already-prepped daytona and don't look back. I see 06-08 models from 2-3.5k from time to time.
Just FYI - not sure your location but a 06 675 was just posted up yesterday on facebook "Michigan Track Riders" in Farmington, MI. Asking $3800 or best offer, and setup for the track already (race body work, case savers, etc. Don't know the guy or the bike, just sharing as FYI. There are a few other 675's on there at various price points ($3800 / $5500 / $7800 / $13000), just depends on your budget
