Just joined the dark side and got a Go Pro 5. So my mounts have changed.

Question is if the mount is hard parted to the bike do you still need a tether?

For instance on the front the base is fastened to my mirror plate by a bolt.

If I did a rear the RAM ball is bolted to the tail but that leaves the arm to the GoPro ball so I tend to safety wire the balls to each other.

Not much to drill on the case and drilling the base seems like it would weaken it. Though I could drill and clip the thumb screw.

Thanks did not see this exact question more the stick on bases.

From the STT Track Day Regulations page: https://www.sportbiketracktime.com/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=11

Please note some NEW tech rules regarding GoPro (or similar) cameras:
    • all Gopros (or similar cameras) that is mounted on a motorcycle must have a tether from the camera case to a point on the motorcycle. It doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to be tethered and secure.-
    • helmet mounted Gopros (or similar helmet mounted cameras) are NOT ALLOWED at all on track.
One of the newer cases, if I remember correctly, had a small slot in it, at the bottom of the door, just big enough for some safety wire to go thru. I can't remember for certain if it was the 5 or Session camera case.

That's where I have mine wired. You can loop safety wire around the metal hinge for the door on the case.

what pauly said.. to compound it... the reason is.. mounts fail or vibrate loose... the tether on the case is to help 1. from the camera coming off and hitting another rider and 2 to save your camera... same in the event of a wreck.. it can assist in keeping the camera tumbling along and into someone elses path or person and so on...

I have been hit by a gopro... dude lost a chain and the camera was attatched to his swingarm.. chain hit cam.. cam bounced and tagged me on the inner thigh as we were coming through grattans sweeper.. I felt like I was hit with a concrete block .. it about ripped my leg off the bike...

this is an extreme example but needed... please please tether... do it before tech so we can see it and approve it... otherwise we will catch it at pit out and tell you to remove it and you may miss a session trying to do so. be proactive !

Tether is tether....as close to the heavy camera part as you can.

My Go Pro is mounted to the front of the bike on the left side where the mirror block off plate previously was at. The RAM base is now dual-purpose......mirror block off plate and Go Pro mount.....and yes, the camera housing is safety wired to one of the bolts that holds the RAM base. I drilled the bolt just like you would do when installing safety wire for a drain plug or a caliper bolt.

Yep that is my thing but being a nerd I have more than one  So I have to modify the back to be friendly also. Plotting for the total solution. Probably stick to drill the ball post on the back and .... well used to wire the balls together but .... Need to make some parts before next time out :)
