My bike took a pretty good thump to the front end at the end of the season... Right now it's with Reuben at 35motorsports getting the triple and forks all squared away, but I was wondering if there's a good frame shop somewhere within a reasonable distance of northern Indiana? Or should I just ride it if it looks okay and then just play with the geometry if needed? I know GMD Computrack is the place to go, but a 12 hour drive, one way, to fix something that might not need fixing is too big a pill to swallow.
Has anybody dealt with MPH in Ohio? http://mphohio.com/mega-m-a-x/if-the-frame-is-bent/ Edit: Nevermind, it looks like they have a fair amount of scathing google reviews.
Well I will be up in Louisville between X-Mas and New Years... If you were to bring it down I would gladly drop it off at GMD on the way back... I drive right past the shop on every trip up.... Shipping it back (Frame Only) wouldn't be too bad....
If anyone would know,, ask Reuben. Would have suggested confirming it was good before the fork work. Finding out now the frame is toast would really suck.
I really appreciate the offer, but I don't want to strip the bike down to the frame until I know I have to. I talked to him about it, he suggested GMD. He also said that frames usually crack at a weld before they bend a bunch, so it's most likely repairable if it even needs anything at all... Even if it is toast, I'd still be reusing everything he's servicing.
I don't know about that. I bent mine so far, we thought the machine was broke. It looked perfect. This is why you get it measured. Eric at Velocity Calibrations down here in St. Louis can measure and straighten. You may check with Matt Drucker at MD Racing out in Western Illinois. I think he can do this as well.
I wouldn't use MPH. Have heard plenty of not-so-good things over the years there. It doesn't help answer your question, but I'd try and schedule a trip to GMD down in Atlanta. Kent down there knows his stuff. I planned a trip around his shop and Barber, knocking both out in a weekend. Worked out great. Or maybe you can find someone to get your bike there and pick it up on the way to a track day, etc. etc.
I had a frame shipped from one of the coasts to the MW for $50 or maybe $75. I know that's not cheap but it's cheaper and easier than driving how ever many hours. Dropping the engine and getting the frame bare really isn't that bad.
Well, I got word back that my forks weren't bent... I think it's reasonable to assume that the forks would bend before the frame does, so I should be good, yes? (say yes.) My plan at this point is to just put it back together and ride it. Road Atlanta is very much on my to-do list this year, so maybe I'll try to make time to check out GMD when I'm down that way later in the year.
If your steering tabs are still on the frame you should be good unless it's dented on the sides... At least that is what I have been told....
Steering tabs were all still there, but the one on the right side of the triple was smooshed over far enough to need repair. The tab on the frame was fine.
