    Hello All,
I am probably just missing this, but I have looked all over the site (probably hiding in the open) and cannot find an answer. What is the requirement for gear? Is there an age requirement on the helmet/suit? etc.

    Thanks in advance,

    Craig

Another newbie question: My helmet is RF 1100 and has a little scratch and two gopro sticky mounts. Would it be a problem?. Just curious

I don't think the sticky mounts would be a problem. My current street helmet I used to use on track has a sticky mount, and some minor rash on the top fin. I still used it on the track and still use it on the street because there doesn't seem to be any damage which would compromise the structural integrity. Not sure if it was officially acceptable by STT standards.

When I crashed at Road America a few weeks ago, I got some deep scratches/gouges in the plastic shell of a brand new helmet. It is useless now. If you have any doubts, replace it.

I don't have any doubts about my helmet. It has a light scratch. I just don't know if the inspection is very strict and if they let me use it. That's all.

STT doesn't check your gear at tech inspection. Some organizations do. That doesn't mean staff wouldn't give you a problem if they notice something, but I've seen a guy pit in wearing a flip-up helmet before. If it is just a scratch in the paint, I wouldn't worry.

it's your head, but it's STT's insurance policy.

I know WERA is very strict about helmets being completely damage-free, and they check the build date to make sure it's less than 5 years old.

I have also had some orgs check the FIT of my helmet. I find that moderately annoying now, but it was extremely valuable when I was a new rider, wearing a helmet that didn't fit me properly.

The age of a helmet really is a factor though. I have two identical Bell helmets, one of which I crashed on the first day I wore it. It's retired, but have worn its replacement for the last year. I put on the crashed one the other day just for kicks (was planning to swap the cloth liners, as my 'new' one is full of suntan lotion!), and it is SIGNIFICANTLY more snug on my noggin.

That prompted me to buy a replacement.

Yep had WERA check the date on my brand new Corsair V when they had only been for sale a few months.

Personally, 5 years is trash, and rash or gouge is trash (not scratches), a flipup is fine on a trike otherwise trash. I have tested helmets the bad way and want a good one :fear: The rules are there to help you help yourself. Contrary to some thinking neither Trevor nor Mongo have a secret pact to sell helmets by making up rules. Rather they don't want to see anyone hurt (more so senselessly)

personally..my minimum, leathers without rips, good mid-high end full face helmet (it's your head!), full length back protector, boots with ankle bracing, best gloves you can realistically afford

I know a guy who..yes, as the book allows..even in wera...wears laced up combat boots, not even steel toe to race in! What's allowed and what's smart aren't necessarily the same thing

S-MX5 are fine for the track. But for upper pace I and A, I would consider getting better boots offering more protection.

    my gear list:
Helmet- Marushin (gold standard UK and does better on Sharps scale than Soei/ Arai high end helmets :))
    Gloves- RS Taichi gauntlets
Leathers- Berik, Moto GP, one piece, titanium edition, Kangaroo skin
Back protector- Knox full length with kidney protectors
    Boots- Sidi Vortice Vernice

I still have the helmet in my profile picture (Suomy Vandal Pinup) but as I had it signed by several of the riders at the TT in 2011, it has been retired :)

I agree with the statement that if a helmet has rash or gouges it needs to be replaced, after all you only have one noggin.

I am brand new. I have read the gear requirements, and pretty sure I'm good on helmet, gloves, and boots. The suit required for novice is my question. I have Olympia jacket and pants, mesh/cordura combo with armor and Sedeci same type stuff. Don't know if either will pass muster. Specifically the "50% zipper contact" requirement. Please explain/help. Thanks in advance. Jim
