Switching from a 180/55 to a 180/60 tire?

    I've been thinking about trying a 180/60 Supercorsa SP rear tire on my '15 ZX-6R for shits and gigs... Theoretically, I expect the steering to be a bit quicker from the rear being higher, and I expect the bike to fall into corners a little easier from the pointier shape of the tire profile. Yes? Maaaaybe even have a slightly larger contact patch when the tire is on it's side?

    I do get some mild head shake from time to time, but nothing terrible... Will this make it worse? Significantly? Obviously it'll make my gearing a bit taller too. Any other cons I should be aware of?

    I run a 180/60 SC on a R6 and I like it. As Sam said, you probably wont even notice it, I don't. You do get a little more lean angle.

    Unless your running mid to front A pace. You likely won't notice the difference. if you're concerned, raise the front end 5mm. If you feel the difference, drop it 5 mm.

    i used 190/55 on my r6 and now 200's on my r1 ... i like to get my bows down tho, at least look fast if you cant be it

    Whatever makes you feel more comfortable. 600's have 5.5" rims and as far as I know they all come with 180/55's as stock, but the tire manufacturers have started to push those boundaries more, and they're now making 190's that are meant to fit just as well if not better on 5.5" rims, and 200's that fit on 6.0" rims for the big bikes. The other thing you have to look at is the ACTUAL dimensions. For example the 180/60 Pirelli is a big freakin tire, and the actual width is like 189 mm if I remember well, so it's much closer to a 190, yet it's meant for a 5.5" rim.

    The question that has no answer.

    Well sort of.
    The one that gives you the traction you need.
    Does not rub on the hard parts of the bike.
    Wide enough to provide drive grip.
    Not to wide as to hinder handling.
    The one that fits the width of the rim best without deforming the shape of the tire as that may reduce grip.


    Typically, you're going to run a 180/55 or 190/55 A 180/60 is about the same size as a 190.
    You pick a brand of tire you like.
    Use a compound that is appropriate for the weather and track surface.
    Setup your bike for that tire to get proper handling and geometry.

    Then ride it and have fun. Tuning for tire wear and life at each weekend.
    Then refresh your suspension at least once a year.

    Wellp, I have a 180/60 coming in the mail. It didn't really cost any more than a 180/55, so I figure I'll just slap it on and see what's what.

    Tangential: What kind of tire temps should I be shooting for on Supercorsa SP V2's?

    I went from 190/55 to 180/55. I'm a slower A rider, but noticed it turned in easier. I think that has more to do with bike geometry than tire profile with the smaller rear dropping the tail end. I also noticed I have to shift a little sooner. I like that the chain isn't right next to the tire anymore.

    I'm not sure what the hot off track carcass temperature should be, but I would say if you are in the pressure range you should be good to go.

    Well, I inadvertently made two changes at the same time, both of which should quicken up the handling, so I'm not sure which is the most responsible. The first time I rode it as it is now I almost wrecked it going around the left-handed pit-out at Mid Ohio because the thing just wants to fall over... but I actually like it now that I've gotten used to it.

    I did a Vortex -1/+2 kit, and the chain that came with the kit wasn't as long as it should've been, forcing me to put the rear wheel almost all the way forward in the adjusters to get enough chain slack, which probably took like 1" off the wheelbase of the bike... between that and the taller rear tire, the bike sure seems more eager to be thrown into a turn. It's actually even kind of tricky to ride slow now. If I'm way off pace or behind a slower rider, I have to pay attention to keep it from diving off the track to the inside of a turn.

    Transitions are a little different too... When I'm flipping the bike from one side to the other it sometimes feels like the front tire will dig in and load up for a split second, and then all the stored energy stands the bike up all at once. It doesn't feel bad or sketchy, just different. If I was smarter I'd invest in a lap timer to see if I was actually making the bike faster or not.

    The biggest potential issue I see is it's possible I may run out of lean angle on my front tire before I use all of the 180/60 rear.
