How do you guys seal the threads on the fuel filler tube that comes with these? Seems that the fitting will be leaking if I don't use some kind of sealant / tape. I know that the white plumbers thread tape dissolves in fuel...any suggestions?
Charlie go to Autozone and get 2 fittings to plug in there.... Run 8 Inches or so of fishtank tubing with a easy end cap for removing... This will prevent any spilling and the gas will pour faster.... Much faster... (No gurgling)
I've never had any leaks or any other issues using mine as is. I think I did put teflon tape on the threads (the white plumbers tape how you referred to it). They use pipe threads, which means they're tapered, so the more you tighten, the better it's going to seal...until you overdo it and you crack something.
Some local guy builds the hoses that my local shop sells... Its a few pipe ends, some Loctite type sealant and even has a screen! @TLR67 is there more to that setup your describing? pics? only downfall for these cans is.... they suck to use when full!
Personally, I like the Flo Fast pump system for the 5 gal. cans. Between an old shoulder injury on my right shoulder, and some milder issues with my left shoulder, it's easier to just set the can on the ground and pump it in tank.
Now thats just nifty! I'll take a 10 gallon one please! I use about 12 gallons a weekend through my 600. I may copy Marc's idea for now. Not baller enough for a $360 gas jug.
I perfected my gas fill method with those cans ...I always fill from the left side of the bike. I put the plastic end of the tube in the gas tank, I put my right foot on the foot peg and rest the gas can pretty much horizontal on my knee, and just hold onto the handle with one hand. I then open the vent cap with the other hand. When I'm done filling, I close the vent, drop my foot off the peg along with the gas can and pull the tube out of the tank. Works flawlessly every time, and my arms don't get sore from trying to hold on to 40+ lbs of gas
Ok ok..... Sir Brooks gets all the credit.... Especially pouring gas for them at the WERa endurance race at Road Atlanta.... Nothing like a STT bike on the podium with a staff sticker on it!!!!!
there is another easy solution that I can't believe hasn't been brought up. Go get a 3/4" 45 degree street elbow(pvc, black iron) from your favorite hardware store. Screw it securely to the lid, attach the vp hose to the elbow. It is so much easier to pour gas this way. another mod i did was buy 2, 3/4" pcs. black iron pipe and a union. for the life of me i can't remember the length of the pipe. I attached a petroleum hand pump to the lid and a longer section with a union to the other side of the lid, I then attached the hand pump, attached 3' of vinyl tubing to the pump and bam...no more lifting. I think total cost was around 65 bucks for the pump, pipe and tubing. It does get a little top heavy when it's empty but not too bad. if interested i can post up a couple of pics tomorrow
They have really gone up in price..... WOW! I've had mine for probably 4 years and if I remember the pump was maybe $120 and the can was another $20 or so.
