This has probably been done 1000 times but wanted fresh suggestions. Spring cleaning this weekend in anticipation of 4/29 at Autobahn. Oil change, coolant flush, brake fluid flush and bleed, chain clean, etc.. First time I'll be changing oil on the new-to-me '03 Gixxer 750. Guy I bought it from suggested the 50/50 synthetic/regular blend. Said full synthetic was too slippery. Suggestions for oil please? I am a middle pack novice rider hoping to get faster this year, don't need the super fancy stuff.
I would recommend 1. The manufacturer suggested quantity of oil.... 2. In the manufacturer recommended grade.... 3. In the proper manufacturer suggested weight for the ambient temperature...... I have not had any issues (ever) using synthetic or mineral oils, as longs as they were rated for wet clutches. Use what makes you happy.
Fair enough, a buddy of mine said the same things and then added, "4. Whatever is on sale at the time." Its the 50/50 blend comment that threw me off, I am not familiar with the stuff.
I think you just want to stay away from oil that has "Energy Conserving" in the API Service circle on the back.
Well, I did have an "issue" once with full synthetic, (but I don't want to scare you). The clutch cable was improperly adjusted. The clutch was not let out 100%, and synthetic oil would let the clutch slip under WOT. Hardly the oil's fault though. 4 of what ever is on sale sounds good to me.
Just sell that bike for a dry clutch one and there won't be that issue lol jk I use Mobil 1 at Wally World. Best price and easy to get. Never had an issue with any bike I've had.
I was the former owner - It was specific to two corners for me where I was rolling on the throttle but it was still slipping with full synth. Putnam #7 righty turn just before dead bear. #10 on Grattan far corner. I could have probably delayed clutch engagement to avoid the situation, but it was noticeable and semi-synth resolved the issue. At a novice pace, you're probably not going to notice this issue. More important than type of oil is the frequency of the change. Keep in mind you're typical 3-5k recommended oil change is based on low rpm cruising. Interval changes when running bike near redline all day at a trackday. I wouldn't go beyond 6 track days without a change.
