99% sure I spun a bearing on my '07 during its first ride on Friday. Has a whopping ~25,000 miles on it. Way to go, Yamaha! Anyone have any advice on best course of action? Worried about buying a used engine, since this seems to be a common occurrence with the 06-07's.

Thanks for any tips and advice!

Not my video, but here is exactly what this heap sounds like...

Sure sounds like mine did when I spun one. Except mine spun one at 1900 miles on my secone ride:eek:. After pulling it apart to confirm that was the issue I priced it out I needed a minimum of $1k worth of parts for a rebuild. With 25k miles on it I would do a full rebuild. Your looking at around $3500 to have someone do it. I chose to Craigslist a motor, threw it in and had it tuned. Been riding it for 2 1/2 season now. The good thing about having it rebuilt is that, if done right, the crank bearing clearances are set to the 08+ spec and it won't happen again.

That's why I'm leaning towards the rebuild. Replacing it would be quicker, but I would worry about the same thing happening down the line. I figure it would cost roughly the same to do the rebuild myself, as it would to buy a used engine, but the peace of mind from reducing the chances of this occurring again would be worth the extra work.

Thanks for the input. Sucks about it going bad so early.

That sucks, sorry to hear that!

    I know of a 08+ motor with 5k for $1000

I would if it work, but it requires a bunch of other parts to make it work. Thanks though.

Couldn't you just use the bottom end or even the head and still keep all of your 07 parts (TB's, airbox etc)?

I haven't heard of anyone doing that, but I'll look into it. Thanks.

Oh nice! I thought it was required to swap the TB's/ECM/Air box/etc in order for the swap to work, but it sounds like that's not the case.

    Thanks for the link!

Well, good news is I was wrong about my hypothesis of a spun rod. The bad news is that it's still not pretty.

Pulled the cams and the lifters. Found this gem hiding on the #1 cylinder intake....

Was feeling hopeful since the engine was immediately shut down upon initially hearing the noise. Pulled the head to inspect the piston, and these are the results....

Now to decide the best course of action. Rebuild? Buy a new engine? Part the bike out? Sell it as is and cut my loses?

I'm not seeing a big deal here. Easy fix. Lots of ways you could go with this if you want to do it your self. If you take it to a builder though, it will be pricey. With 25k on the motor, they are going to replace everything. Valves alone are costly. Unless you have the tools to measure bearing clearance, I would leave that to an experienced shop, then they can open up the tolerances if required. Good luck on the build and hope to see you out there soon.

What fix would you recommend, Steve?

And thanks. I hope to be out there soon.

Man, I just sold that motor I spun a rod bearing in for $400 2 weeks ago. Would have been perfect for what you need. I am sure you plan to, but I would suggest replacing the bearings to get them to the 08+ spec while its tore apart. It could save you lots of $ and headache down the road.

Bummer!! That would have been perfect.

I had a local guy comment on a post I made on FB, and he has an engine in pieces. He is a mechanic and planned to punch it out and port/polish, but decided against it due to cost. Has everything included, so I would need to clean and transfer the good parts over. He's asking $200.

Is the piston gouged? You might be able to just replace the piston and the head as the cheapest route. A used engine would be double that cost with the same amount of unknowns as to wear and tear.

Tough call man. All depends on what you want and it's long term intended use. Used replacement motor is the quickest and usually the most cost effective option. With your existing high mileage motor, just replacing the affected parts is asking for trouble. If I were going to rebuild the existing motor, everything would get replaced, including rods. It's not a cheap option but everything is all new. I would either find a donor motor or a lower mileage motor and drop it in.
