I have at lease 20 track days planned this year through July and will start adding August when a little more money comes in. I have Michelin 2CTs on and enjoy them for my riding in intermediate but with the unpredictable weather in the midwest, is it worth it to invest in having rain tires for those less than ideal track events with water on the ground? I have ridden the 2CTs in the rain and it was my first experience with understear and I didn't like it so much. Will rain "slicks" give a little more fun to the experience and more predictable grip on the road? Just an idea I've been toying with. Thanks, Adam O.
What group are you riding in? IMHO, anything less than mid-pack A group, rain tires are a waste of money, especially if you don't have warmers. I don't have any experience with the 2ct's, but the plain ol' vanila Pilot Powers are excellent in the rain; figure on about 80% traction, compared to dry conditions. Never had any issues with them in the rain. hope this helps, Lance
Rain Tires Keep in mind that full rain tires are really only good on a totally wet track or during rain. On a partially wet or drying track surface, rains are just wasted rubber as they need the water to stay cool enough to work well. On a drying track, rains heat up and wear quickly so Powers really are the way to go most of the time. Like Lance said, 80% traction (maybe 70% useable to be safe) and very predictable. OTOH, rains have been said to work really, REALLY well, with silly levels of grip.... right up to the point that you crash. They are so good that the line between good and on your head is very fine.
