I feel awfully dumb for asking this but... replacing the chain on my project bike since swingarm needed replacing. Got it all lined up, plate on, now what? I have a rivet tool/chain press but the master link doesn't have a little dimple impression in it like most of them that I see.

This is the chain I bought:

Help for the dummy (me) much appreciated!

that master isn't a rivet link.
that u-shaped piece holds the other plate onto the master link.
you will get differing opiions, but I say go w/a riveted master.
I believe you can buy one at any mc store.

if you stay w/the clip, put some RTV on it.
    and check it often!!!!

looks like you bought a chain with the clip and not the rivet type if i am seeing and understanding you correctly.

I run the clip type (pictured) on my dirt bikes. Get a rivet type (mentioned) for your street/track bike. It's not worth the risk of having a thrown chain at speed...

That makes perfect sense. I was thinking that was the gap tool. I'll get a new master link. Thanks all!

Be sure to install the keeper clip in the proper direction. Closed end in direction of rotation. Or just get the proper link.

I wouldn't even bother putting the master on. Yourjust asking for it. I had one come off and chain got wedged between swing arm and sprocket nut. Locked the rear up in a hurry. I will never use master links on my sportbike a again

Never had a clip fail.... Just install in proper direction and insure depth. Rivet, clip it dosent matter.. No linear pressure at all...if either fails its all about bad installation

I'd vote on ditch the clip, and get a riveted master link. just my 2cents though.

My 85 GPZ turbo had the standard clip type. No issues.
As stated above, proper install is the key.

I agree on it's probably better to go with the rivet but I've never had a failure with clips racing motocross and you have a greater chance of debris causing a failure in that scenario. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it's installed correctly.

Why take the chance.....really? Get a rivet master link. A little more effort but for the track, don't take the chance

And next time get a DID or RK.... The quality of the chain means a lot...

Never had a problem with a clip on my dirt or street machines. If you're concerned about the clip you can always dab on some RTV or even run a small piece of safety wire around it. [emoji106]

After months of no trouble I lost a clip out in the middle of nowhere on the street, just happened to check and notice. I went full mcguiver with a paper clip and limped home. Possibly a bad install, but I definitely prefer the confidence of a rivet now.

I've seen quite a few clips safety wired.

I wired mine ,before I moved to a riveted master. As others have said, for me, it wasn't worth the risk. The wire made me feel slightly better though.
