By the way I am not the greatest rider since sliced bread, but knowing that personally I have been told by many a riders on the street how good I am. I keep explaining to them that they are good riders as well the biggest difference between me and them at that point was the risk I was willing to take. Since hitting the track I exactly how dangerous I was riding when I was pushing. I went out for a ride a couple weeks ago and came home because I just was not having fun like I used to. I was worried about every Tom and Mary as well as what was on the road. It just stressed me out bad. It was a lot more fun when I didn't care but I am glad I am making the transition to the track.
I don't talk trash because actions speak louder. There are many good fast ppl here who are very capable of shutting down the cockiness A fast street rider (or a street rider who thinks he's fast) are always humbled at the track
I would agree with that if you are talking at me. Not trying to be cocky personally :thumb: I do have a lot of miles on the street that added up to a lot of bad habits as well.
emd513 while I appreciate your like I will say one thing to you personally. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT LOOKING GOOD BEFORE YOU GET TO THE TRACK. That is the job of these instructors to help you look good. THE HILL is not the place to practice your technique. It's one thing to take yourself out and quite a different one to hurt someone else in the process. I guess I have become that guy that I use to always talk crap about on the street. A track guy that does not feel the street is the place to test he limits of man and machine. That's what they have race courses for, then if you hurt someone you are there with hopefully like minded people. WE ALL KNOW THE RISK WHEN WE HIT THE TRACK!!!
No sir, not talking at you at all. Just speaking from experience. I made the transition from street to track because I was amazed at what I saw and wanted to be a part of the madness :thumb:
Oh and on the thread topic I prefer the Q3's. Rock solid on my 1000RR but I am looking forward to trying a set of the Power Supersports on David Greys recommendation.
I personally run a 300 rear through the dragon.....about mid 8's if I dont hit traffic...and if that big rear is up to temp of course.....
I was just picking up some parts at STG and Jeff O. was telling me that Dave Grey did a 1:22 at Grattan on Q3's. For those of you that have never ridden at Grattan, that is SMOKIN' fast. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I would say that most of upper pack A riders are not even hitting 1:25? Now I'm sure this was under perfect weather/tire pressure conditions, but still. That's amazing. So yeah, plenty of tire for me since my best time is at least 10 seconds slower than that. After reading posts here, looking at the prices of tires, and talking to the folks at STG I think a smart tire progression would be: Dunlop Q3 Bridgestone BT003 Michelin Super Sport None of which require tire warmers..... B
I would bet that was done on a Michelin SuperSPort tire, not the Q3. But yes, that is smokin fast on a street/ track tire.
This was my experience last year. I went to Grattan with stt before the wera race to try to learn the track and 1:25 was all the faster I could go with the traffic. Pretty sure no one but the fast racers do those kind of times at track days there
I actually just watched STG's video review with David Grey and the Michelin tire line-up this morning. David Grey did a 1:22 on the Super Sports, but he also said it was moving around a lot. So that is a VERY FAST and experienced rider making the :22 doable. I have not run Michelin's but the Q2's/Q3's have taken me down to a 1:39 at Barber without warmers. That's a lower level A pace and was very confident in the tire..
That is smoking on a street tire:thumb::thumb: two thumbs up for you! Maybe I do need to try the Q3 out!
For those with more experience, where would D211 GP-As fall in this? Are they Dunlop's "equivalent" to the Pilot Super Sport? I didn't run out of tire last year on my Q2s. And have a set of Q3s ready for the beginning of this season. I doubt i'll ever exceed the limits of these (almost 10 seconds off a good A-pace at Grattan), but one day I may decide to try "stickier" tires assuming money allows. Brian
Mid 8's I call major bullshit. Jared Barnes is the only one to hit those times. Trust me mid 9's is insane. Sent from my HTC6600LVW using Tapatalk
Dragunslayer I didn't mean for it to come out as to look good. Just didn't know how else to put it. It was more working on technique then anything while enjoying the hill. But I got all your guys points, and after talking with these guys I'll slow it down more until I get to the track. Sent from my HTC6600LVW using Tapatalk
The GP-A is Dunlop''s DOT race tire. Not the same category as the above list. While I have heard some say they have run GP-A's without warmers (also on the street), it is not recommended and I would think a bad idea. The Michelin SS is a track day tire with a street capabilitites, while the GP-A is a race tire for track only and tire warmers..
Moving to race tires this year so hopefully will do better! The Q3 is a great tire. I personally prefer the Q2 but I had WAY more miles on them and I would set the cold pressure at 30/30 and LEAVE EM.. The Q3's are new so I only ran them a couple times and the right tire pressure was finicky. I did lowside on the Q3's as well (I think tire pressure and liter bike throttle in turn 2 )... but after a weekend on Q3's, there is WAY more tread left than on Q2's so the longevity is much greater!
