I just bought a used motor from a 2010 r6 to put in my 2008 r6. It's used with 10k mikes on it. On the first start up it was smoking pretty bad (white smoke). I didn't have my headers tight and noticed a small amount of oil leaking from the #1 cylinder at the header. I let it run until it got to 187 degrees and shut it off. I let it cool down and started it again. This time there was less smoke and one drop of oil leaking. I let it get 214 and the fans turned on and I shut it off. My question is, is it normal for it to smoke like that at first? I was thinking maybe the valves just need to heat up and seat right.

I’m guessing while out of the bike a little oil got past the rings into the combustion chamber. It just needs to burn off. If it persists for long then it’s something else.

I used to rebuild 2-Strokes. The oil used for assembly would do the same thing. It would disappear after the first ride.

White smoke is typically coolant/water. Do a pressure check of your cooling system to make sure you don't have any head gasket / head issues. Good Luck.

Yes after the first ride the smoke stopped. It kinda hesitates when I give it full throttle too. I'm hoping that will go away once o get a couple more rides in. Thanks for the responses!

Keep in mind what Matt said he’s been doing this a lot longer than I have.
Watch your coolant and oil levels and also for the oil going a milky color.

It may also depend on how the new motor was stored or shipped... If it was on its side on a pallet - oil will find its way into other location that are not normal when the engine is in the upright operating position. LOL!!! Just notice this is an old thread...

    How is it running now?
