I had a lowside(2nd in 3 weeks) at little tally this weekend and I broke the swingarm spool-bobbin thingy on the left side. Let me clarify; I actually broke the dropdown piece of the swingarm itself, the piece that has the threaded hole to screw it into. Now I can kinda lift it with the rear stand with the hook on that side turned around, but its way lopsided and doesn't make me feel very confident that its going to stay upright when I walk away from it for extended periods. What do you guys recommend I do about this, or is there a type of stand to switch to, or what? Otherwise the bike is good to go, I just down want to have to resort to leaning it up against my car between sessions.
Got any names? Also, do they just weld on like a nut or something with threads, or a plate and then drill and tap it?
Just weld on a nut and fill in damage on swing arm! Paint back black with black magic marker! Call Apel Machine Shop and get "little" John Calvarie!
There are many different types of aluminum... Make sure the welder is aware of it specially... It's almost as cost effective just to get another swing arm pending the bike...
I did the same thing. Well, not lowside twice in 3 weeks...but ummmm.. jk But when i lowsided (at Tally T2) the exact same thing happens to me. Broke the spool and nipple that was welded to the swing arm. Instead of spending 50-75 to get another one welded on, i actually ground the other side off with a drimmel and bought the swing arm top support attachment for my pit bull stand. http://www.pit-bull.com/product/F0002-001.html Don't know if you have a pit bull stand, but thought this was a great cost effective alternative. Either way.....good luck on the repair, and hope you have a speedy recovery. To assure you don't lowside for the 3rd time in "x" weeks.....my suggestion is to assess what's going on that causes you to continue to come off. Suspension? BP? Tires? Etc....... Finding the issue will help eliminate repair in the future. Good luck
Yes, this is the most cost effective solution and what I'm going to do for now As far as the crash frequency goes, The first was at the museum turn at Barber. I think I had too much weight on my hands, as I'd been sliding on old, worn down, slippery footpegs all day. New rearsets(they no longer made compatible replacement pegs) fixed this. The second was entirely the result of me being impatient with a slower rider and I guess fatigue, as I ended up just riding off the inside of the track at turn 2 at little tally. I think this is the most important lesson to learn, as we're all out there together, and thankfully I didn't take anyone else out with me. My next 'mod' is going to be done with a label maker. I'm printing "BE PATIENT" and putting it between my bars or on the dash somewhere.
