Huge Crash mid-ohio advanced group

  1. As the rider on the Buell I wanted to see the pics before I posted...

First, I hope that recovery is quick and complete. It always sucks to see someone go down, especially like that.

I was on the second lap on the Buell, quite a different beast then my SV650, so I was giving plenty of room and not riding very tight lines because I was not going very fast. I knew something happened, just didn't know what. When I saw the red flag I thought that it may have been what I felt.

I am not sure if he grabbed a big handful or if his lever hit my bike. If the lever hit, it didn't feel like much... like Craig said, felt like something fell off the bike (it is a Harley after all), I started looking down trying to figure out what happened. Last thing I expected was someone trying to go around me on the outside going down the hill.

When I got back to the pits Dennis B told me that it happened right behind me.

  2. Re: Official rider version

Hold on a minute... you tried a crazy pass on the outside of me as I gave you plenty of room inside and out (as shown by the pics) and then you get pissed at me???

I was obviously on a demo bike and was not about to push it.

My lines were not erratic and never are. I did not know what the hell happened as I indicated in my last post.

I am sorry that you crashed, but it is hard to blame me when you ran into me.

    Chad,
I'm not mad at you , just mentioning the circumstances!
is advanced group the right place to demo a bike ? heck it probably wouldn"t pass the tech rules for advanced
why is that wearing a yellow jersey gives you the power to over ride rules ? remember your"re a CR so if you're joy riding maybe a more speed appropriate group or take off the yellow jersey is that so hard ?
you can't move the goal posts just because you are the staff, we pay to play.
A look at you blowing the apex at turn 6,
    B. running wide on the exit turn 6
c turn 7 running wide and swooping back to left for turn 8 , your speed did not justify it!

The pictures SHOW that he wasn't doing what you're saying.

In addition, if he had been swooping or "sweeping" or whatever, you should have gone by him on the brakes into 6. If not there, then up the hill leading into 7. If not there, then on the outside of 7. If not there, then on the brakes coming into 8, but on the other side of him because 75% of riders move to the left to set up for it. If not there, then.......

My point is this: if he were doing what you say he was, then you had ample opportunity to pass him in spots considered safer than where you attempted the pass. If you have spent ANY time at Mid-O, you know that his move 3' to the left coming into T8 is standard operating procedure for riders setting up for that turn. In fact, most riders shift further to the left. There was still a good 5' between him and the grass where you could have easily fit.

All that said, I DO wish you a speedy recovery, both mentally & physically, and I hope that you can re-evaluate this situation a few days from now (take a look at that pic set once more) and come to a different conclusion.

As a track coach, I can assure you that Monte/Bonnie do not take it lightly when one of us acts as if the rules don't apply. I myself have been "talked to" for missing a checkered flag. It was completely on accident (honestly just missed it), but it is my responsibility as a track coach to hold myself to a higher standard and be an example. I cannot name any other track coaches that don't operate under that same mindset, Chad included.

    Nick,
looks like your're missing the picture again! I see you standing up for your own, but here are questions you're sidestepping
    A. was the buell tech passed for advanced ?
    B. Demo in adv group ?
    C. should the CR be the standard we strive to follow ?
thanks for the concern, I',m not mad at anyone just want to bring it light so it doesn't happen to anyone else.
p.s I wasn't trying to pass just wanted to ride!

I am not giving you a hard time, just telling you what we were told about the demos.

Now giving you a hard time, how is it at the track you don't say 2 words and you are all over it on here.

i dont think its the fact that he has "internet courage" i think it was more so the fact that he was completely knocked out, moved to an ambulance, then transported to OSU hospital and doesnt even remember anything. you could tell him you guys talked about it and he wouldnt even know.

not that day, everytime I see him at the track I never hear him talk.

  12. Ah Jason Jason.

that's just the spill over effect of an aspiring sales guy. :D

On a side note, i must mention about the exogenous factors as well.

The paramedics were quick, courteous and very professional. a great setup by STT. A+ all the way.

Monte & Bonnie have always been very understanding & nice, they are very helpful and considerate. There isn't a better organization out there to ride with.

Lastly, a big shout out to KNOX back & chest protector. despite being body slammed by over 350lbs of bike, nothing broken in the chest back area.

  13. gotham speeks ! you just gotta be interesting enough to talk to  :p

    Re: Official rider version

First I am glad you're feeling better.

Track Coach was on the Buell for the first time ever and getting used to the bike... Remember that part in the riders meeting where I say...

"Ok... So you're following a rider and he takes a sweeping line through T1 and then again through T2 and then again through T3.... so now you;re going to pass him at the end f the straight.. he's going to hold a tight line, right?"

Any way... keep this nice, I like all of you guys a lot and if this turns into a shitfest I'm gonna shut er' down. Ok?

it seems many a rider coming out of turn 8 went out to the right side of the track and would come back to the left side of the track so set up for turn 9. from looking at the pictures it looks like the buell rider had gone wide after T8 and was coming back to the left side of the track as the crashing rider tried to pass on the buell's left side. As the buell got into the crasher's line, the crasher suddenly braked, but may have grabbed too much front brake for this downhill section. to flip over the bars like that you really have to grab a lot of front brake to make it stick like that. that's just an opinion from looking at the pictures. it would be interesting what others think.

  17. isn't the bottom line this ?

in a track day situation / not racing , anytime you run into the back of someone IT IS YOUR FAULT ,NOT THEIRS !!!!!!

there was plenty of track there and when everyone is play riding, you should never be that close !!!!1

It's the job of the passer to complete the pass safely, yes, track day, race, on the street, whatever.

  20. every one of monte's riders meetings seems to conflict with your idea that trackdays are not race practice and in the adv group you are still supposed to make clean , 2-3 foot passes. we can rub shoulders at a race , not with guys out there paying for a safe track experience . the c/r could have easily been hurt from being overtaken from the rear.
sorry brian , i am not yet a beleiver.
