hello, I found a great app in the apple store (Vidometer) for recording track sessions. I am wondering if the ram mounts like this one http://www.rammount.com/Products/AppleMounts/iPhoneMounts/RAMHOLAP11U/tabid/5052/Default.aspx are these phone holders accepted on track? Of course I will safety wire it. Any advice/opinion about it? thanks, guido
I had an iPhone holder on my bike when I first started last year because I rode my bike on the streets and to the track. The particular iPhone holder I had would not point straight tho, and if I was u, I would just buy a go pro. The quality of the video is so much better and the higher quality video will be very much worth it in case there is an incident of one kind or another.
Jbuzz, thanks for the suggestion. I honestly don't wanna spend $400 for a go pro. I used the iPhone on my bike with a holder I 3D printed and I was actually very happy about the quality of the video. (only problem was my clear cheap windshield which was distorting a little the view). About the "pointing" issue, the ram mount looks very flexible and I think you can really point the camera wherever you want. My main question is whether it is accepted by the tech inspection or not. Keep in mind that the support will be mounted using an expandable plug going through the steering bearing seat on the top triple clamp. so you would rather risk your phone? than buy a go pro? I understand the cost aspect, but think of the what if I crash scenario.
The "GoPro Rule" still applies: No matter how it is secured, make sure the device has a tether that anchors directly to a hard point on the motorcycle. -Tom
mmm...yes I would risk my $500 phone instead of buying a $400 camera thanks Tom, so should I wire both pieces of the support? The phone holder is made of pieces...
I would just safety wire the piece that actually holds the phone, if anything. The ram mount isn't going anywhere if it is secured properly. The only thing you need to worry about is the phone coming out of the holder, but there isn't any anchor points on a phone, and I doubt you want to drill any holes in it.
your are right, drilling the phone is not an option and you are also right when you say that for sure the assembly weakest point is the phone/holder which is very safe though.
Suggestion on wiring. Wire wrap the RAM arm so it cannot open. It would not have to be that tight just enough to keep the arm from opening enough to release the ball. As to the phone if you are concerned you could put a small piece of tape from the top down and cover the facing cam. Though I think the ram mount would be secure enough in all but a crash and in that case the phone is trash if hit hard enough to knock it out of a RAM mount IMO.
Buy a used go pro IMO, doesn't have I be a 3 the older gens still take amazing video, and 20 minute sessions will fill your phone up rather quickly. A friend actually got a hero 3 black edition with all the goodies plus the wifi remote, used for $180. I see hero2's under $150 all the time as well
One thing about the iPhone GPS programs was that the gps hz wasn't really fast enough to get really clear maps. On the street it was fine but on the track moving a little quicker I'd get whole corners cut off because it didn't ping as fast as dedicated GPS devices
you almost made me buy one thanks for sharing it. Thanks to all for the suggestions and thoughts! Really appreciated every opinion...and I think I will end up buying a go pro.
All the money issues aside, I don't know if I would risk crashing my bike and losing my phone for logistical reasons. I can think I might really need the phone if I crash
I use a GoPro for video capture and an old iPhone for GPS data acquisition. It doesn't provide the resolution of a 10 Hz unit but it's adequate for a slow track day rider like me. Here's an example of what you can do with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPDh7JEJ7Ms I use a Ram Mount secured to my upper fairing stay with a slightly modified Otterbox case to secure the iPhone which also is used as a lap timer. I tried to video a few years ago with the iPhone in this mount and it was horrible. The Ram mount just amplifies all the vibrations into the video. I'll be at ACC tomorrow on a red/black RC51 #103 in Intermediate. You're welcome to check out how I have everything secured and wired if you like. I have crashed in this configuration (a few times), including a roll over, and the iPhone, case, and mount are still like new.
I am a big fan of RAM mounts. I have used their iphone mount to record video at the gap, turned out total shit though. I still use them to attach GoPros to my bike. I drilled a hole on the adjusting thingy (both RAM and GoPro), safety wired a safety clip and done! takes seconds to attach/remove and there is no way that camera will get detached from my bike.
Check out the iPhone, Laptimer, and GoPro mount from MOTO-D. Super secure and adjustable, you can safety tether anything you want to the mount plate and full tuck is not an issue.
WOW that's expensive and bulky, the MOTO-D GoPro Sportbike Motorcycle Mount has a great price and free shipping. http://www.motodracing.com/sportbike-camera-mount
Bulky? Not sure about that seems pretty streamline to me but it is spendy for sure. The fork mount gives a guy some different mounting options. I'm in the market for a mount myself and have looked at that motoD setup but don't see how I can mount my Samsung note to it. Need a mount to use: Harrys Lap Timer app for track and Waze for touring.
