Just put some track fairings on my cbr Optimal to be exact. Anyway The Lower cowl is pretty close to the exhaust in my opinion and gets HOT. Never noticed the oem one as I never thought about it and its wide open under neath it. This one is sealed so if u spill any oil it doesnt go on the track. Went for a 5 minute ride around the neighbor hood came back and let it idle for a minute and the spot under the headers was almost to hot to put my hand on for more than a seconded, under the cat was hot too just not as bad... Is this normal? Is fiberglass like fire retardant? I think it would be fine at speed on track but at a stop light on the street I dont know. Nothings touching the fiberglass tho
It will start burning eventually. Not flames, but heavy discoloration and smells bad. The lower pan on my SV (has 999 bodywork) did this. Ended up using hi-temp exhaust wrap on the area of the mid pipe that is close. Stopped the burning of it. My guess is a lot of race glass is designed not to have the cat on the exhaust.
I have a "sheet" of heat resistant material that is self stick inside my lower. I'm not sure who makes it, as it was on the bike when I bought it. To me, this is a better option than the heat wrap tape for the exhaust. Maybe do a Google search for heat resistant sheets. Here ya go, something like this. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/d...w4LM98wCFQUIaQodtVYJOw&ibanner=MobileSwitchNo
And sometimes they are just too close for the heat wrap or sheets to work well. Bodywork builders can't account for every exhaust system out there, had a Leo Vince on an 09 GSX-R1000 that I couldn't shield enough heat in an area about 3x6 in size. Sectioned out a rectangle and using a form layed up a drop section in the lower in that area to give the clearance I needed. Pain in the butt but it worked.
You need about an inch gap minimum. Anything less is making the composite too hot (not to mention any paint)....the heat shield material really makes a difference as it reflects the heat back off the plastics....
Sportbike track gear.com has a heat shield that should work for any body work. http://www.sportbiketrackgear.com/armour-bodies-bodywork-heat-shield/ . I have some on my lower cowl and it works great for keeping the heat from damaging the fiberglass and the paint.
