Only done 1 track day but am hooked, building a dedicated track bike and need some suggestions for what tire. On a 600rr. Don't intend on riding in rain and don't mind using warmers if necessary. TIA.
Pick a brand and go with what you can afford. I started on Dunlop Q2's and stayed on those until I was outriding them. I switched to GPA's when I could afford the upgrade. I don't know what all is out there, but that's my .02 Good luck!
Q3 for me as well. if you want a slick, with better grip and still reasonable wear, Pirelli Super Pro's Either tire will take you to advanced level.
Here is a great supplier and a great tire. Some of our Instructors are using these tires and it's all you need until you get into the mid pack Advanced group.... http://www.sportbiketireservice.com/Power-Supersport-trackday-tire/
Motomommy has Q3's on sale right now for $251/set, WITH free shipping if you buy 2 sets AND a $50 mail-in rebate from Dunlop. That's $200 TYD a set and that's really difficult to beat. Not to mention that a Q3 will run down into the A pace....
Q3's 186.00 for a SET, http://www.revzilla.com/ has the Q3 for 236.00 delivered. Dunlop currently has 50.00 rebate. I bought two sets last year same deal. So for about 375.00 TOTAL I had good rubber all year. A Q3 on my SV1000 riding I or Novice and I will get about 6 track days, per tire. Two sets lasts me the whole season. Total tire budget 375.00 for a FULL track day season (around 10 - 14 events). my pricing is for 180 / 120 combo
SLICKS!! go big or go home...LOL.. I agree from a price point and capability of a tire to get you into "A" - Q3
When I compare direct for my sizes, Motomummy was $15 cheaper...but congrats on a great set of tires you will be very happy with! Just remember, regardless of tire, if no warmers 2 WARMUP LAPS!!
Do the Q3s get greasy towards the end of the session if you use warmers and work them hard on the track?
I use my warmers on low heat (around 120) and never seem to have a problem. But then again we are talking big bike SV1000 big rider 6_5 250lbs and moderately slow so your experience maybe different. For the most part the Q3' seem to run the same all day. ambient air <65 28 / 30 ambient air >65 <75 26 / 30 ambient air >75 24 / 30 those are cold temps in the morning. I check the air coming off the track a couple times during the day, I like them at 28 / 30 hot off the track. Never more than 30 / 32 hot off the track. but always check with the local tire guy for better/more current information.
