I've got my "new" trailer just about set to haul the bike to the track. I bought an old beater about 2 months ago. I cut the axle off of it and installed suspension. I replaced the wood floor, welded on tabs for brake lights, painted, and wired it up. The only thing left is to get some 12 inch wheels for it. The wheel chock was a christmas present. Good job, =-) Two years back I transformed a similar little guy. It went from a "WTF is that thing?" to a nice little two bike trailer. You'll get some good miles out of it, and as with anything that you've skinned a few knuckles with, you'll feel that much better using it.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I got a chance to really use my little welder for something significant. I'll be able to test my welding skills (or lack of), seeing it the welds fail. I fit the bike onto it yesterday and found that my weight distribution is just a bit too neutral. I want just a little more tongue weight. I'm going to have to get something to weld on a new front piece so that I can move the wheel chock forward 2 inches. My superhawk is longer than my 600, so that makes just a little bit of weight difference.
This thread should give you an idea of what twilkinson3 was talking about, although it isn't for a storage box, but similar concept. http://www.sttforum.com/sttforum/viewtopic.php?t=6647
I've considered that idea actually. The only problem is I can't figure what I would place in it. Since I'm pulling it with my truck, I have all the storage space I need in there, especially with the topper on it for protection. If I decided to add a storage bin, that's more expense that I'll never really get out of it. My goal was to not have too much invested in it. Thanks for the idea though. it's appreciated.
Tools/spares/if it's big enough tires... lots of possibilities - my initial thought was the box itself would give you the tongue weight you were looking for and add storage
well, I'm adding 12 inch tires to it instead of 8s. That will put the back end higher and improve tongue weight. If I put the spare on the tongue, that would probably be enough to be comfortable. it's got a little tongue weight right now, but not enough for my liking. I guess I could put a steel tray there to put the cooler/beer on!
That's my trailer in the suggested link there and I used the storage bin on the tongue to keep a jack, wheel chocks, tie downs, locks and a few other misc things. Worked well because you've always got that stuff with the trailer / don't have to load/unload every trackday. Regardless, the little trailer that you've got will serve you well. =-)
the thing I haven't figured out quite yet is storage. My STUPID homeowners association won't allow it to be parked anywhere outside of the house, so for now it's in the garage. I am thinking of storing it in the back yard in a not-easy-to-see spot. For that, I may have to stand it up on end. I'm sure I'll figure out something though.
Ah, storage and a strict HOA are precisely the reasons I don't have a trailer, but I am lucky that I have a friend with a nice enclosed trailer and an F250 Diesel to pull it. I just pay for the fuel to the track days. I know there is a local trailer place here that also stores trailers for a fee. Not sure how much it costs, but look around there may be someplace to store it that is not too expensive near you.
been there and done that! :? I have a boat that I store at a friend's house, but I don't want to take advantage of their generosity any more than I am. Storage places around here charge at least $25 a month. In a year I'd be paying more for storage than the dang trailer is worth, so that's out. I wonder if I can just blow up my HOA?
