I'm curious on everyone's thoughts on the various race licensing schools operating in the midwest/mid atlantic area. I've set as my goal for this year to improve my riding skills and lap times over the course of the season, to run in the advanced group, and then attend a race school to earn my provisional license and possibly do a race or two. i've no illusions of becoming the next Nicky Hayden; at 35, 6'8 & 245 pounds, i think perhaps the best that i can hope for, is to be the next Chris Onwiler...

what are the pro's and cons of the various schools?

I know Monte holds one at grattan, but unfortunately, i'll be out of town the weekend that it's scheduled this year, but i'd like to hear how it compares nonetheless.

    post up racers!

    thanks,

    Lance

Only school I've attended was the Cornerspeed School located at VIR. It was really great. I'm glad I took it.

Edit: I completely forgot that I took STT's PRO school years ago. Actually I think it was the first school ever. BobD was in charge of it and that man not only is a great rider, but really knows how to instruct, and he had a top knotch staff. Unfortunately when I took the school it wasn't accredited for CCS/WERA. Glad to hear that STT is now.

Troy and I got our schooling and Lic. from Fasttrax's out of Nelson's ledges. Bob did a pretty good job and his circuit was fun to race in. No one was earning a living at it and we all had to go to work Monday morning so things didn't get to far out of hand.

Actually, Monte is authorized to license people for AHRMA, & Bob at FASTTRAX will accept a certificate from Monte. What Monte needs to see before he's willing to issue you a certificate is between you & him. FASTTRAX is a great way to get your feet wet, since it is fairly relaxed clubman level racing (trophies, but no prize money). They have endurance races on Saturdays, which is nice if you're used to the amount of track time you typically get at a track day. Then they have sprint races on Sundays, so you can get a taste for what it's like to sit around most of the day waiting for a couple of sprint races. Unfortunatley, FASTTRAX only races at Nelson Ledges, which makes Grattan look nice. I don't know if it's still the case, but FASTTRAX was affiliated with CCS, so you basically were approved for CCS racing once you got a FASTTRAX license. I don't know weather or not WERA would allow someone with a CCS license to race in one of their events without going through their squid school.

Just noticed at the bottom of the News page on the STT website that STT is also approved for WERA licensing. Check with Monte for details on exactly what he needs to see.

FYI, if you get a license from one org then pretty much any other org will accept it. I had taken Reg Pridmore's CLASS school back in 2001 and that was good enough to get me my CCS license in 2003. The fact that I had a CCS license enabled me to get a license with Fasttrax and WERA.

If you just want a license then talk to Monte or hit up one of the Saturday schools during a WERA event (if you plan on racing WERA). If it is Fasttrax then they also have a Saturday race school on most of their race weekends. It will teach you the flags, how to start, how to grid, etc.

If you are looking for a race school that will give you riding tips and such then look at Monte's PRO school or some of the other ones out there.

Hey Lance, we'll be there at Team Chicago too, unless it's going to snow. I decided not to ride since I haven't done a track day yet. No reason to push it. We'll be there for the Test and Tune day on Sunday as well. See you there!

In case anyone else is interested: Team Chicago

No, it's too much work when it's cold out- too hard to keep the temperature right. I'll be bringing it out in May, though. Definitely taking it to BeaverRun, & I'll probably have it at the C.O.R.E/LED dates, at Grattan. Are you working as a control rider that weekend?
