Just saw an ad on Craigslist. Guy selling his 06 636 for pretty cheap. Said second gear needs replaced because at 5k it kicks the bike into neutral.

Seems like an odd problem, but the price is good and the rest of the bike is clean. (lowered but i can fix that)

I'm a transmission newb....how much would this be to fix?

He is asking about $3k for the bike.

*edit: this would be for my track bike*

    very common on those bikes.

To fix it you need to pull the motor out, split the engine cases (you'll be staring at the crankshaft, transmission parts, etc). It's not a simple project but it can be done. You're probably better off buying a replacement motor that has a good transmission in it and just doing a motor swap.

If you get an 07 or newer zx6r you'll get the "cassette transmission", this does NOT require you to split the crankcase to make repairs, which is fantastic (my transmission is currently sitting on my garage floor, going back in tomorrow), WAY easier than my 06 zx6r repair.

i thought on the 2005-06 you could pull the oil pan, and get at the gears and trans without splitting the cases?

a tech at a shop said guys were making "rotiseries" and flipping the bike upside down, and working on the transmision that way.

I've heard it is possible to gain access to the shift forks and drum, however my understanding is you can not get the input and output shafts out. If the bike is jumping out of gear at only 5k rpm the gears are almost certainly rounded off to the point where they must be replaced.

Here is the bottom of my 06 motor without hte oil pan, i don't see how you could get the shafts out.

Hmm. Ok. Seems like more trouble than i can handle considering I still live in an apartment with only a "public" garage. Price is decent, but i would wonder what else has gone awry on the bike then.

Thanks for the help again Jeremy. You're a boss.

Well, heck.....I'll send him an email and offer a sub $3k price. If he takes it then i wont feel bad paying someone to give me a hand.

A buddy of mine had his trans done on his 06 and it was somwhere around $1600-$1800 job but the folks at SpeedTech did beef it up a bit.

I've been eyeballing that 06 since it went up. I'd LOVE to have that bike. Its perfect.

Its also in New Jersey. Which sucks.

So, shipping (assuming i'm lax with the schedule) would only be about $400 as quoted. Thats totally do-able.
I'm going to message this guy.

You can change the shift forks by going through the oil pan, not that hard at all. But chances are the gear "dogs" are rounded and you will need to split the cases to change the gear out.

It sounds worse than it is.

Remember it is just one bolt at a time and the flat billin, pants sagging, 20 something, at the bike shop will be using the same service manual that you can get in CD form on ebay for $8, except he won't care about doing it right as much as you will if you do it yourself.

The gears are about $100 a piece and there is an "input" and an "output" for each gear. Shift forks are about $70 and there are 3 of them. All in all depending how many gears you swap while in there, you will spend about $300 - $600 if you do it yourself.

Don't be scared, just take your time and there are a couple of how to write ups on the Kawasaki forums.

PS (No offense if you are a flat billin', pants saggin', 20 something.) :D

HA! No. No i'm a "curved billin' greasey old Alpine Stars hat, band t-shirt and regular torn up jeans wearing, belt having 30 something.

But i still only have a "public garage" and only basic hand tools. I'd someday like to attempt that level of project, but not right now.
