So for Intermediate class, I see there is a requirement for a back protector, and a specific mention that the foam pad that comes in some leathers is not enough. My question is, if you get a CE approved replacement for it, will that satisfy the requirement?

I ask specifically about this item:
    http://www.newenough.com/armor/back...et/ce_approved_motorcycle_back_protector.html
for use in my GPX leathers.

    Thanks!

Yes it will be adiquate and pass tech. With that said, that's not really a race pc designed for the track, it's street gear.

When it comes to my head and spine, I want GOOD or GREAT. Just my opinion and I understand that not everyone has $160+ to invest and that JR pc is a step in the direction of safety.

I just got my suit fitted to me and there is no way I can get anything larger into it. I can't even ride with a sweater on! If there is a similar format unit that will fit in and provide better protection, I'm all ears.

You'll have more room in your leathers if you take out the cheesey foam back pad. If you must, take a deep breath when you start zipping up & exhale when you get to your chest. Your leathers will loosen up a bit eventually. if not, it may be time to cut back on beer, pizza & twinkies...

Losing weight isn't really an option, I'm a bean pole as it is. Anyway, the question isn't about general fit, its asking if there is an alternative to the JR CE-approved back insert that is of similar size. The CE approved unit replaces the foam pad that came standard, and I'm not really in a position to put in anything larger.

A better back protector than that JoeRocket piece will also be bigger and offer more and better protection. if that's all that will fit, that's that. As Monte said, it's merely adequate, but at least it's CE rated, but I personally wouldn't use that one. One thing I've learned in the crashes that I've had (I've had plenty- don't start, Monte :x), is the value of good protective gear. I would stongly urge you to have your suit altered again to accomodate a better back protector; Spyder Leatherworks is a good place to start.
I see in your sig that you're racing CCS? I'm sure they'd like to see a better back protector, too.

The Bohn ProRace (i think) back protector is not that much thicker than the JR piece, but it does cover a lot more area of the back and tailbone to boot.

Suggestion: when at the track next, walk down to Brian Van w/ your leathers on but the JR pad removed and try one on. As Lance said, a deep breath may be needed and it may not be comfy right away, but it is WELL worth it if you fall down. I promise you will get used to it and it will not restrict your movement.

IMHO, the tail bone proctection is worth it alone, epecially if there is no room for padded shorts as well.

I'd send the suit back to a tailor to have them add a bit of material so you can fit some "GREAT" back protection in that suit! Your tailor can add or remove material, and to make room enough for a back protector is pretty straight forward. I sent my suit to Spyder leatherworks, they do fantastic work at a good price. Bummer to have to wait for tailoring again, but I'd do it anyways.
