What is the best way to tape my lights and signals for a track day? I don't want to have sticky residue if I use duck tape. Ive also heard that the heat from the head light can melt the tape. Any ideas from those in the know?
I remove the fuse for the lights and use Duct tape. Little or no residue but I only leave it on for a day or two. Spray wax/cleaner works well for removeing what little is there.
a lot of people also use blue masking tape, too- it doesn't leave residue. on my streetbike, when I take it out, I use red duct tape cuz it matches... I disconnect the lights, too- front AND rear. A little carb cleaner cleans up any goo.
i used to pull the fuses but the fuse for my rear light was connected in junction with the tach so i just unplugged the lights wires. i always used duct tape. just used goo gone if there was any residue.
Best to do whatever it takes to have the lights not work. That could be removing a fuse, removing the bulbs, unplugging the lamp connectors. The blue tape is almost see through, so if you use that be sure your brake lights do not work or put lost of lavers on them. If you use duct tape: Spray the lamp lenses with a spray wax. (I use Honda spray wax/cleaner) Cut the duct tape to size Tape the duct tape on your pants, shirt or jacket. (this will leave some fuzz on the tape) remove the tape. Do this a couple of times. (This will reduce the adhesive of the tape) Tape up the lamp lenses. The tape will come off a lot easier. If there is any glue on the lenses (or body work), soak it with kerosene (or Goo Gone) and wipe it off.
I tape with standard 2" wide 3M masking tape then apply duct tape over in the color of choice . Never had a problem , comes off easy even after forgetting about it in the hot trailer for several days ....
