I'm finally comfortable enough running in 'I' to start worrying about lap times, can anyone recommend some ideas for timing devices. Ive heard of

    -GPS units
    -Transponders and a receiver

    any other thoughts or reviews??

    cheers:thumb:

XT lap timers.... Get a 5 ft cord and mount display on dash and unit on tail.. There is always a beacon at the track... Well at least at STT and NESBA events..

I see the XT timer is about 190bucks at STG website, and the transmitter is like 55. by beacon, are you referring to the transmitter? That can be shared???

You just need the laptimer, not the transmitter.

The nice thing about GPS devices are that you don't have to worry about a beacon/transmitter at the track, you can also record data as well. I have ran the XT GPX Pro, and liked it a lot, it worked well, recorded split times, and let me get some figures to determine my fastest "theoretical" lap at a track, and in turn figure out where I needed to work on corners, entry speed, braking etc. I replaced mine with an AIM MXL Pista dash, because I could, and I love it just as much. Quite fun pulling up at Barber and seeing it in track mode and displaying times while riding.

It depends on how much you want to spend. If you are a 1-3 times a year person, get the XT Mini, a self contained unit that you just mount in the front and ride. If you want more information, pick up the Ultra, which records more laps and information for further review.

It all comes down to what you want to do with the lap information. If you just want to know times, get the mini and apply the other money to track time.

Why dont i need the transmitter with the XT?

Wow, that AIM device is the real deal! Although a bit more than i wanted to spend;-) I have seen other cheaper GPS devices that seem to record but not necessarliy display current times

I'm the typical '5 track days' a year kind of dude....for now anyways. So the XT looks up my alley.

At STT events we have the transmitter (beacon) and set it up.

Thanks Dave, thats kind of what i thought. So in essence all the receiver on your bike cares about is when you pass by the beacon again and trips the internal timer? That seems pretty simple

It is about as simple as it gets, it's simply an infrared transmitter and the receiver on your bike just trips when it passes through the beam.

XT Mini lap timer. Super easy to use. I use the fork tube mount. Works, great, no wiring, no cables. I didn't need my timer, to do all the extra stuff the XT ultra can do. I just wanted an aluminum cased, timer.

I've had very good luck with this http://racing.qstarz.com/Products/BT-Q1000eX.html

Only downside is no display, but I never looked at my XT on the track anyway. Only takes a minute to transfer the info to your lap top. You can share gps files and see where you're weak vs others that have the same unit. Set as many splits as you like. A lot of stuff for the price of a XT.

Screen shots of some info you can get.

Split times and theoretical best lap.

Speed and position on the track. Heavy lines are slowing thin accelerating. You can compare laps on this screen.
