My name is Josh and I'm a novice hear going to my first track days on June 7 at Road America. I have searched the site and there is a ton of crap on tires but I can't find what I'm looking for.

I bought a dedicated track bike (05' GSXR 1000) from a member here.....he encouraged me to join! Thanks Tom....great site.

Anyways the bike has Dunlop slicks (195's) which are pretty new and I'm told I should be riding them. I going in the Novice group and wondering if they will be ok for the first time out or if I should pick up a different set......and if so what kind?

Thanks in advance for any help.

My experience is 5-6 years on an R1 in which I had pretty good control of. I could drag a knee on some local on-ramps but I realize the track is going to be a different world!

As long as the 195s are already on the bike and in good shape, I don't see any reason to take them off and buy another set...what is the reasoning behind that??? Tdub

I agree w/ Brian on this one... yes, I said it... I AGREE WITH BRIAN!!!

While the slicks are probably great tires, a novice rider will learn more w/ a set of Powers than a set of race slicks. Why? They will never get to temp in the school group and will likely feel like they are moving around. Especially at a track like RA where there is a long way between turns, the slicks wont maintain heat at school speeds. Also, I feel that people use tires as a "safety net" that prevents them from learning what the bike is REALLY doing. It allows for a rider to learn to be SMOOTH!

That being said, KEEP THEM AROUND for when you progress into another group and enjoy the benefits of the added grip. My $ .02, you will have MORE than enough grip well into the advanced group on powers... just ask our instructors.
