Just gotta throw my .02 in. While the purpose of brake fluid is the same as any hydraulic fluid, it also does have some lubricating properties. Just don't use it in place of a required lubricant.
It bothers me when people make emotional and "this seems reasonable" "gut feeling" type claims. Show me hard data, and then you can convince me. Not that you're trying to, but just to show where I'm coming from when I say it is overkill. Examples: http://www.600rr.net/vb/showthread.php?t=189852 http://www.triumph675.net/forum/showthread.php?t=42618 http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?268175-Oil-Change-Frequency-Track-Use Also, just because we are not chaining our oil every weekend, does not mean we don't do it in thousands of miles, or that we don't change our tires.
Sure hope everyone is changing their oil, brake fluid and tires before every session. I mean, c'mon people!!! I keed, I keed...
Honestly we need to get on the track. We are now arguing about stupid crap. I honestly dont care when or if anybody changes their oil or if you change it after every lap because Im not writing the check. As long as your bike is safe, thats all that matters. I think some people point out flaws in other posts to either start an arguement or to try an show superior knowledge. This topic was about brake fluid compatibility and turned into a big put down session. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
It is. Environment! We usually don't even pay for oil and lubricants. Between the sponsorship and awesome support by Silkolene and contingency, we get our oil for close to nothing. Silkolene is one of few who will combine discount with contingency. still doesn't mean one has to flush the system every weekend. All that oil has to go somewhere... (not at you, Brian): But who am i talking to? we're here in 'merica. who cares about the environment
The challenge thing is supposed to be a fun thing. Its a lot more about talking smack then anything. I Prolly should not have brought it up. I have never seen anybody race each other at a track day......:lmao: There is always a chance to b the track day hero!
I'm not going to argue with guys that sent in oil to be analyzed, but have you seen whatever bike you race and the timed intervals for components? Ducati for example has a race schedule for maintaining a set model under race application. It is much more frequent than what is recommended for street use. Thus, your bike gets more wear in a shorter period of time than a street bike does. Also, look at my valves after 1500 race miles and look at your bike after 1500 street miles. Those are hard facts and you'll see the deposits and how much more is on the street bike. Same with piston buildup, rod wear, etc. Shock linkages and swing arm bolts. Know how many guys take a street bike that has NEVER had the swing arm bolt removed since new, have 10,000 street miles then trackday ridden for two seasons? How about race prep where we take every single bolt in the swingarm, steering head, axle, etc and prep and lubricate. That corrosion in the street bike leads to wear and tear and potentially catastrophic failure. Common? No. But neither is a locked throttle and you hitting a concrete wall that is protected by air fence with only a small area that is not protected and hitting that. The odds are good that it'll be just fine. But do you want to gamble with the odds it can lead to death? Again, regular and routine maintenance is always good and a lot of us probably go above and beyond. It's more than oil and brake fluid. Guys who are religious on maintaining oil and brake fluid are probably religious on bike upkeep...
But, there are plenty of guys that ride trackdays that are wearing and tearing a bike and out more trackday miles on a bike than racers do in two seasons of racing. Trackdays are serious and are hard on machines. Can you prolong vs. racing? Sure! But you would be amazed at the bikes I have seen running out there...
Actually, we get free oil. But, I give mine to a guy that reuses it... Safe and clean... I run through buckets of it with the cars, race bike and tractor...
I dont know why you color only a black and white picture??? Just because we don't change oil every track day doesn't mean we put the bike in the garage after the season is over and pull it back out in the spring, blow the dust of and add some gas! I, as well as all the guys I know have the bike apart during the winter and clean, check and maintain everything and replace whatever necessary. The End!:thumb:
I'm not sure where I mentioned anyone on here is doing it nor that you should. I am saying that a lot of guys do not... I'm pointing out the fact it is cheap and I don't even do it every weekend unless a race weekend. But, your example is in fact some of the cases.
Ok, for the record I just flushed out all of whatever Aprilia puts in their bikes for brake fluid and replaced with the Castrol SRF. We'll find out in a little over a week at Road America if there is any discernible difference. I will say that the front brake lever is already firmer than it was before. So much so that I adjusted my lever back "2" clicks. Stay tuned.........
