We're going to Beaver Run (North Track) for the first time. I'd like to get some feedback from people who ride there a lot, e.g., braking points, reference marks, etc.

    Here's two other vids.

    http://www.fifteenfive.com/videos/04_09Sept_Beaverun_Steve.mov

    and

http://www.fifteenfive.com/videos/04_05May_Beaverun_Brian_LowRes.mov (ignore the crash at the end)

Beaverun's a great track. Oh and FYI, there is only a North track at Beaverun right now. South's still in development.

Good rule of thumb for most of Beaverun's turns... Late apex them. Beaver's got her share of ripples (damn cars and frost heaves) but she's also really grippy. There's a great mix of turns there. Double apex, on camber, off camber, tight 90's and wide open sweepers. She's pretty flowing too. Tons of fun!

    Thanks Lance and Mary!

    Mary,

Are you going to be at Beaver Run end of May? If so, I wouldn't mind following you for a session or two and learning the race line, etc.

Yep, I'll be there all three days. Find me in the morning and I'll give you the grand tour.

    Thanks for the videos! :D

Any idea who the Novice instructors will be that weekend? It'll be my first track day. Based on Mary's description, not sure if I should be nervous or not, but it doesn't look too intimidating.

I'll be coaching, but no idea till I get there if I'll do Nov or Int.

Don't be nervous. It's a fun track and no one will push you to go faster than you want to go. Just think of it as a group ride on the streets, only no oncoming traffic or gravel or guardrails, etc. Just be sure to give your coach as much of your own feedback. We can only do so much for you without your help to us. Let us know if you're feeling intimidated or if you're having issues with some turn or aspect we're trying to show you. Likewise let us know if you feel totally confident and want to pick it up more. If you're not getting what you want out of the coaches then tell someone, that day at the track. Don't wait till later to bring it up, cause it will get taken care of then and there if you're not having fun.

    Looking forward to meeting ya!

Ahhh yes, that little crash.... That is what happens when you get greedy give it too much gas (with too little experience). The rear tire kicked out (nice view of the infield) then regripped and snapped the bike back straight and into some headshakes. But staying on the gas and very light on the bars let the headshakes work themselves out. The bike came under control just before I went into the grass.

Of-course, the headshakes pushed the callipers back from the rotors on the front. So there I was bouncing through the grass thinking "wow I just saved a highside" and not thinking much else as I grabbed the front brake repeatedly trying to slow down. I rode through the grass thinking "odd, where's my brakes?" as I pumped the lever. A few pumps and the brakes came back on... and I learned why you shouldn't use the front brake in the grass. It rarely works. LOL.

I tell ya.... you only need to learn that "no front brake in the grass" lesson ONCE!

I like to think of BeaverRun as Grattan Lite. there's a couple technical corners, lots of elevation changes, but unlike grattan, the macadam is in excellent shape and is super grippy-even when wet. beaver has really great flow. my first time in Intermediate was at Beaver. she's pretty forgiving, but she'll smack you if you forget to pay attention.

Best thing about Beaver is the peeps! i met some great people there from PA, MD, CT & NY, & i can't wait to go back...

As a BMW rider, i've had lots of practice in the grass... going to rallys*, riding across the campgrounds etc. little did i know that could come in handy at the track.

    Cheers,

    Lance

    * a BMW Motorcycle rally: 8,000 nerds with motorcycles, sitting in Kermit chairs, drinking beer and going to bed early.

I've been to two; one was enough.

Speaking of grassy excursions, here are some clips of Wade and Misko's 2005 season at Grattan, including a little off roading by Misko, who filmed all of this. He's the blue SV at the end.

Lance, why did your wife want to sell her BMW? If I were her, I would want both! 8)

Mary your website is cool. You'll be at BeaveRun at the end of the month for a race?

Thanks Helise. I should be at the WERA Beaverun race. This is my first season racing though, so it's yet to be seen if I'll really enjoy it and get into it. But I'll find that out this weekend at VIR.

It's mostly my fault. since i started doing track days last Aug, I haven't had much interest in touring. her bike is a great sport-tourer, with more an emphasis on tourer, than sport. it's too heavy for her limited upper body strength and as a result, she doesn't ride it as much as she should. she's fallen in love with the SV-650S and think's she'll ride it more that her beemer. plus it will give her more flexibility, including the ability to take it to the track, which she can't do very easily with her 600# sport tourer.

    cheers,

    lance

Ahhh...I was wondering why there was nothing listed for the south track. We'll look you up Saturday morning. Misko from Cycleforums will be there too. Hopefully we'll be able to keep up with you. :?

The only other tracks we've been to are Gingerman, Mid-Ohio and Grattan. Our goal this year is to go to more tracks, even if that means fewer track days (at least that is what I am telling Helise.) So, Beaver Run, Putnum and Barber are on our to-do list this year, along with Mid-Ohio and Grattan. Our first event at Grattan this year is less than four weeks away....I sure hope it warms up!

LOL! We'll do as many as we can squeeze in. Behold the power of the STT Women's discount! (You may regret having ever gotten me a bike).

Lance that's great that you are encouraging her! Is she eager to do a track day?

HI there, new guy here. Does anyone know if the 5/27 Beaverrun novice class still has any openings? Not my first track day but it has been over a year. If it is sold out I'll just have to go intermediate. Thanks. I'm really looking forward to Beaver and Mid-ohio this year.

STT's website will indicate whether a group is sold out for a particular event. If it is not marked as sold out, space should be available. At least that is how it's been in the past.
