GSX-R750?

    I need to replace my stolen SV. I am considering a GSXR750 and am looking to get some feedback from people who have/had one. I will be using it mainly at Grattan, but also Mid-Ohio, BeaveRun and Putnum.



    Also, for those that started out on an SV, how long should I expect it will take to get up to speed on a GSXR750? I run low 30's at Grattan on the SV, best time being a low 1:29.



    Finally, if anyone has a '04 or newer track/raced prep GSXR750 for sale let me know.

    I don't currently own one, but I've had (and killed) a couple. You can never go wrong with a GSX-R750, so long as it's in good condition.

    Sorry about the stolen bike .

    I have an 01 750 .Great all around bike ,Not too big for the little tracks and just big enough for Road America .

    Last year everyone said "hes on a 1k " its a 750 people

    New ones have one drawback . I know of two bikes that fell over in the trailer and broke footpeg mounts right off the frame .

    750's are great.... Sweet peas bike is fast, You won't burn up tires like you would on a 1000. Logical choice for a track bike.... Bullet proof engine, You'll love sweet peas bike!!!!!!

    I've owned a 98 and an 01 750. The 01 had been my all-time favorite bike. As a coach, I often have to lead students on 1000cc machines. Those guys were getting annoyed last year having to follow my 03 SV650, with its low straightaway speeds of about 130 mph. As a coach, I don't need the latest, most super-competitive bike, so when I decided to get something fast enough to stay ahead of a 1000 down the straight, what did I get?



    AN 03 GSXR750!!!!!!!!!!!!!!



    Your main difference is that the SV has such abundant torque, yet it is really difficult to spin up the rear tire. It's also narrow, so that makes it easy to climb around on. A GSXR750 has similar torque figures, but much more horsepower. The sweet spot of peak torque occurs much higher in the GSXR's rev range. With the Gixxer, once the motor "comes on the cam" at about 9000 rpm, power comes on in a huge rush.

    Perhaps you've noticed that your SV seemed to have 2 gears for any situation. A GSXR 750 also has 2 gears for any situation, except that one is "Wake me up when we get to nine grand," and the other is "Saturday night sprint car sideways YEE HAW!!!!" :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

    The place where you would most notice the difference and miss your SV is in Grattan's tight infield. The places where a GSXR rules over an SV is anywhere you can use the extra power. An SV makes any competent rider a hero because it never spins the rear tire. The GSXR's power and wheelspin make it harder to ride, and therefore requires a more skillful rider to unleash its full potential than an SV does. Consider the Gixxer your next challenge!

    BTW, I saw the pictures of your stolen SVs. Those bikes were SICK TRICK! It's a gawdamm shame that some scumbag/scumbags had the nerve to steal such obvious labors of love from such a proud and caring owner. With any luck, the pig bastages will be stripping a Goldwing or Electra Glide when it falls over on them, and they'll end up dying a long, slow, squirming death in their chop shop, not to be found until the smell of decay brings the police! :x :evil: :evil:

    Consistent 1:32's came fairly easy and is a very comfortable pace for me on the SV. I've found it very difficult to get below that though on a consistent basis. I keep a pretty tight line exiting most corners so I know I can carry more speed through them, especially T1 & T2. Need to grow some bigger ones I guess. :?

    Thanks for the detailed response. Your comparison is pretty much what I suspected. One question. How much of a difference will I notice on Grattan's infield? I looked at the '06's Friday and the darn things feel lighter and smaller than the SV. Of course part of that could be due to me expecting it to feel bigger and heavier than it is.

    It's not the weight. It's the way each bike carrys that weight, and also the power delivery. As I said, the SV is narrow, and that makes climbing around on it much easier. The infield on an SV is like hammering nails with hard, driving strokes, while the extra power of a GSXR makes the same stretch an act of surgically EXTREME throttle control!

    Basically, a twin of any size is very confidence inspiring, because it has plenty of torquey grunt to move it through and out of corners without drama. A 4 cylinder must spin at high rpm to deliver that thrust, so it hits with a screaming whipcrack of power that requires a more careful hand to ride at the limit.

    If this doesn't appeal to you, a big twin might be just your taste....

    Thanks for the clarification. I understand what you're saying. I definitely prefer v-twins, but there just isn't much to choose from in the 750cc-1000cc range that would be a good choice for Grattan, which is where I do 80% of my track days. I toyed with the idea of a 749, but I want a fairly maintanence free bike for the track, and one that has a ready supply of cheap replacement parts on ebay. :) I haven't ruled out a 600 either, but all things considered the 750 seems like a better choice.

    My 03 750 is a demon! Imagine wheelieing off the sidewall and your kneepuck exiting four at Grattan! :shock: The 00 to 03 bikes are all alike, and replacement & hop-up parts are quite cheap these days on Ebay. (Which is why I picked this bike to coach with....)

    Lithium Motorsports has one for sale right now, all race prepped. Maybe you'd be interested in giving them a call? 1-712-546-7747 Lithium hosts a number of the STT midwest events in Monte's absence, so delivery could be arranged, and you'd be buying from someone you'd keep on seeing at the track. Rob also usually gives an outstanding support package when he sells a racebike.

    A little older than you were thinking, but I thought I'd mention it....

    I had an 03' 750 (pictured) and was very happy with it until I rode an 04' GSXR 600 that made the 03' feel like a tank. The 04's and newer bikes are effortless to ride and the 06's come stock with slipper clutches to boot! :wink:

    Hello Nate,



    That is the bike Lance now has, right? The down-sizing that occurred in '04 is the main reason I am looking for an '04 or newer, especially if I go with the 750. I honestly couldn't tell the difference between the '06 600 and 750 when I looked at them last week. The slipper clutch is very appealing also, but I'm hoping to find a race prepped '04 or '05 so I don't have to spend additional money on clip-ons, rearsets, shock, fork work, etc. That said, a new '06 is very tempting...

    I've been looking at that add repeatedly for the past several days! If I had the settlement check for our stolen bikes I'd buy that bike today.

    to add to the previous comments about the GSXR-750: while I'm not quite in the same league as the rest of the commentators, switching from twin that is technically in the same class as the SV (at least as far as CCS/ASRAand AHRMA competition classifications go...) the biggest difference I noticed was the throttle. the BMW twin was more or less point and squirt; just grab a handfull and go. The GSXR requires a more delicate touch, which forced me to really concentrate on my throttle inputs. this slowed me down at first and really made me a better rider, as my throttle hand became smoother, my lines became smoother as well. I'm a little intimidated by the bike & therefore taking less risks and not riding as close to the ragged edge as I had been on the Beemer. given the times you run on the SV, after you become acquainted with the more viscious power delivery, you'll be nearly unstoppable, I reckon. Misko & Mike will both have to upgrade too!
