It was recommended to me to move to a better tire over the Q3. I'm looking for input on either Dunlop GP-A Pros or the new Cup Evos.

Can anyone give be some input on:

    Which to go with?

    How long will they last?

If I went with the GP-A Pros, which compound?

Where can I buy them from? (searching online I'm not finding a source)

What tire do they use in racing? (wera,CCS, Midwest)

As for tire warmer, I'd like something decent that will last. If that means going with the $250 STG ones will work then great, but I rather not spend $650 on the chicken hawks if I don't need to. Any recommendations?

    FZ1guy Hey - Watch this...

If you were an advanced rider you wouldn't be asking, and since you're asking, the Q3's are a very good tire.

My lack of knowledge on whats prefered and not prefered may lead you to believe "I'm not an advanced rider" but I'm not exactly sloth slow, I'm just new to this motorsport and looking for something with more peak grip than the q3 and ultimately be alittle safer at a brisk pace. This past weekend I was able to find my limit on the Q3s and would rather have alittle more tire wear and decrease my chances of wrecking the bike.

Now if you'd like to be "Advanced" we can further this conversation into one about bell curve grip characteristics and break away characteristics between the GP-A Pro, Cup Evo, and the Q3 but that may be alittle more indepth than I'm currently interested in talking about.

Nice meeting you also Sam. If you're in A at NCM this coming August event (22/23) I'll see you out there. :thumb: thanks, I try to be decent, I'll figure it out eventually. I hope to be fast one day but as we all know, the term "fast" is very relative.

I'll order those warmers! That sounds way better than $650. Any input of how long the dunlops will last?

Another issue that I didn't mention was I'm currently on a 180 rear tire, moving to the dunlops I'd have to run a 190/60/17, this obviously raises the rear slightly. I know alot of people run 10mm for extenders on the front of the GSXR-600 but I currently don't have them. With the Cup Evos I can get a 180/55/17 or a 190/55/17 rear tire which would mean my geometry wouldn't be messed with.

Over the winter I'm doing a ohlins setup and could do the fork extender then but lets get through this season first. :)

If your not stuck on the GPA pro, they have 190/55 in slicks and 212s. The recommended rim width is 5.5 for the 190, which I believe is what is on your 600.

I can't say anything on the GP-A Pros, the bike I just bought came with Cup's.
Borrowed some warmers and all I can say is WOW.

Was running Pr'3's, great street tire and served me well but they just can't compare to the Cup's.

First day on the bike, they bumped me from Novice to Intermediate, between the bike and tires took 15 seconds off my lap time. 1:45 to 1:30
Once I get used to the bike expect things to continue to improve.

On the warmers, you get what you pay for.
Many say the moto's are OK, and for the price good warmers.
If your like me, get the woodcraft's can be had for 375 new. Several long time riders have used there's for years and no problems. Best bang for the buck, in there opinion.

OH, track riding is a riot, like I need to tell you that.

so far this year i have 4 A days on my r1 on medium compound rear slick and still have another day or two, its all about throttle maintenance .. and not going to putnam lol on my r6 last year i got 5 days out of medium front and 6 outa the rear, they grip like glue for what i throw at them and never had an issue, the mj moto gear warmers i have used same set for two years and not a single issue, i bought two sets and still havent used the backup set but its nice to have just in case ... but i didnt compensate anything suspension wise by switching from 180 to 190 rear on the r6 and 190 to 200 on the r1 .. to each their own but youll find the grip you are looking for with the medium compound 120/190 set and can expect 5-6 days from each unless u go to putnam, then expect 2 lol, in your video seems your throttle is under control so you oughta get 5 days each tire .. have any questions feel free to txt 314-712-5477 i could talk motorcycles all day

Any of the major 4 brands have slicks and DOT's that are plenty good. For DOT's:

Dunlop: GP-A212 and other variations of GP-A
    Bridgestone: R10
Michelin: Power Cup and more recently the Power Cup EVO which is the new replacement
    Pirelli: SuperCorsa SC

All of these are used in club racing, it's really just rider preference, but you're not racing so it doesn't matter right now anyway. If you look into all of those, you will see the Dunlops are the cheapest, and probably best bang for your buck. If you go to a CCS race event, you'll see all the fast guys (and overall majority of people) on Pirrelis and Michelins. Dunlops have also been the spec tires in AMA for quite some time, so no matter what you go with, I can guarantee you won't outride the tires.

A lot of times people go with what's more convenient. What does your local tire supplier sell? Or the tire service providers at your local track days?

For warmers, MJ Moto are about the cheapest you can get. $170 for a set with 2 year warranty. They don't get as hot as Woodcrafts or Chicken Hawks but they do the job ok, especially for the price.

I cannot recall which bike you have so....

If you are wanting to race and looking for more grip I would suggest you go to slicks unless you have a 600. The reason is in section 9j http://maps.wera.com/rulebook/ As to brand consider a few things. First you have to like them. Second what is vendor support (racing usually has all brands) at the venues. Third contingency if you get fast enough.

As to durability I will go ahead and give you the bad news. The faster you get the shorter tires last. When I first started I could get 6-7 days running all sessions start to finish on the RC (which is hard on rears). That was on a Diablo Corsa. The new version of that, which better, would not make it a weekend start to finish for me riding at "A". If it did I would be sliding hard at the end. Oh and I am not fast ;-) The GSXR might be a little better but not much.

I love the power cup. Great grip and very predictable when your getting to the limit of the grip. For warmers I can recommend the Moto-D warmer. Great warmer, gets nice and hot quick and has great warranty.

    Josh,
I would get some tires of your choice... Michelins are a little less than the Dunlops and each have their advantage... Try the EVO's and just get some basic Warmers... Maybe Dual Temp.... Tyre SOX, Hawks ect... When its time to spend 650 ect for warmers just make sure you take care of them... DONT Take them off and throw them on the ground... The Ones with the thermostats on them like the Good Hawks or T2's are very fragile to say the least... I have had my T-2's for over 6 Years and only cooked up one rear for a Thermostat recall...

Hey Josh, just bought the Vortex dual temp warmers off Sportbike Track Gear, on sale for $249.99. I believe they are made by Chicken Hawk for Vortex. Just got them so can't give an opinion of them yet.

Looks like I'm going to pick up some tires and warmers before the next event. I'm ordering the MJ Moto $165 warmers, I'm sure they aren't chicken hawk pro series but that seems like a winter purchase when I'm not paying entry fees all the time.

    As for tires...

I'm sure the GPA-Pros would be great but I'm slightly concerned about the rear being a 190/60 without making any changes to the bikes geometry? (its replacing a 180/55 q3) I think Sam said above it would be fine but it would be noticeable taller and probably hike up the rear.

As for the Cup Evos, I hear thats the new "fast" tire but I don't even know where to order them? I can't find them online at all besides ebay. Granted the Evo Cup comes in 190/55 and 180/55 and only one tire compound option. Would you suggest a 180 or 190 rear on my 2011 GSXR-600? To many options.

Wear between the GPA-Pro and Cup Evo?

I also read alot of reviews of the Michelin having more tread squirm than the Dunlops. I like how my current Q3s feel, maybe I should just stay with Dunlop?
Sorry for all the questions, just trying to learn everything!
